This genus which includes important tree-destroying fungi is a rather small group of fairly large fleshy fungi, with pileus squamulose or smooth, gills decurrent, stipe fibrous, annulate or non-annulate; the hyphae are without clamps; spores are non-amyloid.
Pileus 8-13 cm diam., lemon yellow, sprinkled thickly at centre and more sparsely towards the margin with dark brown, tufted scales, dry, convex at first with strongly down-rolled margin, becoming almost plane with a waved edge; flesh firm, white. Gills sinuately decurrent, moderately crowded, creamy white becoming stained pinkish fawn. Stipe 10-15 x 1-1.5 cm, light brown above substantial floccose ring, shading to brown or olive green below, velutinate, sometimes with a few tufted scales, solid, tough, slightly bulbous at base. Spores 7-8 x 5-6.5 µm, non-amyloid, moderately thick-walled (Fig. 25); print white.

The thick mealy gills and echinate non-amyloid spores are characters by which the members of this genus are readily distinguished. However, the size and shape of spores, which is so constant a feature of the species of other genera, is not necessarily so for the species of Laccaria.
This smaller species of similar colouring to L. laccata, with pileus usually channelled and striate, is almost as common, and occurs in similar places. Cooke and Massee described the spores as globose, verrucose, 9-10 µm diam. The two type-specimens at Kew, one collected by Colenso in New Zealand, and the other from Brisbane have spores the same size though the New Zealand ones show slightly thicker walls and longer spines than the Australian (Fig. 1 and 2). Specimens in the writer's herbarium show globose thick-walled spores, 6-8 µm diam., with spines 1-1.5 µm long, the spore-size being constant in each collection (Fig. 3).
This usually brick-red species is the commonest toadstool in New Zealand occurring under both native and exotic woody vegetation at all times of the year. Singer (1951) describes the spores as ellipsoid or globose, not more than 10 µm, with spines less than. 1 µm. long. The writer has examined specimens L. laccata in The Kew Herbarium which show the following spore characters:-

(1)     coll. J. E. C. Aberdeen, Queensland, 4.8.1952; spores globose, 8-9 µm diam., spines in, close-set.

(2)     coll. R. W. G. Dennis, Portugal, 16.10.1955; spores ovoid 8-9 x 10-11 µm, spines 0.5 µm.

(3)     Herbarium Berkeley, coll. in Tasmania; spores ovoid 8-9 x 10-11 µm, spines 0.5 µm.

Lange (1935) describes the spores of C. (Laccaria) laccata var. proxima, as ovate-globose, minutely echinulate, 7.5-9 x 6.75-7.5 µm, with spines 1 µm long, but mentions also collections with large globose, spores and comments, probably the form of the spore is not constant; Rea (1922) states that both elliptical and globose spores have been found on the same plant, but this does not seem to have been confirmed and is contrary to the writer's observations.

New Zealand collections which have been examined usually have globose spores, 9-10 µm diam., with well-developed spines, but ovoid spores have also been seen. More information about the distribution of spore forms in relation to macroscopic characters would be interesting.

This mixed description also incorporates L. proxima

The writer has no collections to match the description of this fungus, which is assumed to belong to Crinipellis and to be close to C. procera. A letter from the Naturhistorisches Museum, Vienna, dated 7th March 1962, reported that the type could not be traced. The details published are: - Pileus 10-12 mm diam., brown to pale brown, glabrous, fluted and sulcate with 16-20 grooves. Stipe 10-12 cm x 1-2 mm, blackish brown, covered with sparse short hairs. Spores 12 x 6 µm. Collected at Drury, Auckland, by Hochstetter. The illustrations show hairs on the stipe but none on the pileus. New collections from the type locality should be sought.
This buff-coloured 'fairy-ring' toadstool fairly commonly forms conspicuous rings in pasture. It appears to be parasitic on grass roots and leaves an area of weak grass inside the ring. Nelson, 19.4.1956, D. Read; Hope, 22.4.1956, D. Read; Nelson, 20.4.1957, E. B. Kidson, etc.

The type specimen at Kew has been examined and the following; description applies to it: Pileus 5-10 mm diam., pinkish sepia, furfuraceous, orbicular to reniform. Gills adnate pinkish fawn, moderately distant. Stipe 2-3 x 0.5 mm, pinkish sepia, farinaceous, excentric, curved, inserted in dead wood. Spores 8-10 x 4-5 µm, non-amyloid. Hymenophoral trama non-amyloid. Cuticle of pseudoamyloid globe cells. The New Zealand material referred to this species by Massee (1898), and preserved at Kew, is not of Marasmius but appears to belong to the Laschia complex. Massee's statement that the gills are sometimes uppermost is incorrect. The writer has no herbarium specimens of M. subsupinus, but considers that a small stalked bracket agaric, commonly seen on standing dead wood in New Zealand, is referable to this species. More collections are needed. M. inversus Massee in Trans. N.Z. Inst. 31: 343 (1898) appears to be identical, though the spores of the type, which has been examined at Kew slightly smaller, 6-8 x 4-5 µm Massee's claim that the gills are uppermost appears insupportable, and may have been due to a lack of understanding of the habit of growth.

A small form of this widespread species, closely similar to that illustrated by Lange (1936), was collected at Levin on a tree lucerne stump by A. S. Wilkinson, 1.8.1952. This collection, Stevenson 874, had a sour smell when fresh, but anatomical characters and spores agree with descriptions of this species. A larger form with yellow gills was collected from indigenous forest by M. Curran, at Muritai, 12.2.1958.

Though this species resembles P. laciniatocrenatus (Speg) Speg. which is discussed by Singer (1950) this writer considers it to be distinct. Other Pleurotus spp. recorded from New Zealand by Massee (1898) have not been collected by the writer. As the identifications are in doubt the records need confirmation.

The different collections show considerable variation in the thickness of the spore-wall and the sharpness and the length of the spines. Pleurotus guilfoylei Berk., P. colensoi Berk. and P. scabriusculus Berk., the types of which have been examined at Kew, all have very similar spiny spores. More collections and studies of the fresh material are needed. The cystidia figured by Mr. D. A. Reid are occasionally present on the gill-faces in Lloyd's material, which was collected at Waikaremoana by H. Hill (no date), and also in some of the writer's collections, but they are not a striking feature of the gills as they are in the following genus.
Pileus 1.5-3 µm diam., creamy-fawn with greenish tinges, orbicular to reniform, subfibrillose to velutinate; flesh thin; laterally attached. Gills creamy, moderately thick, distant and shallow with gill-like folds between. Spores 9 x 5-6 µm, non-amyloid, thin-walled (Fig. 44).
