Descriptions
Fls in axillary or terminal racemes or spikes, infls sts compound. Calyx us. deeply and almost equally 4-lobed, the fifth lobe when present us. smaller. Corolla short- or long-tubed, with 4 subequal spreading lobes. Stamens 2, anthers held above tube. Style long, stigma capitate. Capsule dehiscing by the sagittal splitting of the septum and each carpel opening by distal median suture through the septal wall and in varying degrees also through the locule wall; septum us. across widest diam. and capsule ± dorsally compressed; seeds us. flattened and smooth. Ever-green shrubs or small trees with lvs opp., us. entire though often toothed in seedling, rarely showing veins other than midrib. Perhaps c. 100 spp., mostly endemic in N.Z. but two shared with S. America and one of them extending to Falkland Is; a few spp. in Tasmania, south-east Australia and New Guinea. Type sp. = .
Fls in axillary racemes which may be long or greatly reduced, sts to solitary bibracteate fl. Calyx deeply and evenly 4-lobed, a small fifth lobe occ. present. Corolla variable in size and shape, tube very short to long, lobes 4 or 5, unequal. Stamens 2, anthers held above tube. Style long, stigma capitate. Capsule laterally compressed with septum across narrowest diam., emarginate and ± 2-lobed, dehiscing loculicidally and us. less deeply septicidally, sts separating to base into 4 valves; seeds us. many, ± flattened, smooth. Prostrate to decumbent subshrubs with woody or semiwoody stems rooting in lower parts, rarely herbaceous. Lvs opp., mostly crenate or toothed, sessile or shortly petioled. Not certainly recorded outside N.Z.
Fls solitary, each subtended by a pair of connate bracts, sessile or sub-sessile in lf-axils near tips of branches. Calyx 5-(6)-lobed. Corolla small, salverform, shortly lobed, or larger, broadly funnelform and deeply lobed; lobes 5-(6). Stamens 2, inserted near throat of corolla, filaments, short, anthers large. Capsule with septum across narrowest diam., deeply 2-lobed, laterally compressed and broadest at tip, turgid below, flattened on anterior and posterior faces, splitting loculicidally and septicidally into 4 valves, included in calyx. Seeds us. many, not strongly flattened. Small densely pulvinate perennial herbs or prostrate rooting shrubs; lvs opp., sessile, shortly connate at base, closely quadrifariously or irregularly imbricate, entire, ± ciliate or hairy. Genus of a few spp. endemic to N.Z. Type sp. (selected by W. R. B. Oliver in Rec. Dom. Mus., Wellington 1, 1944, 231):

Hermaphrodite shrubs or subshrubs. Leaves opposite, usually decussate, sometimes subdistichous on prostrate or trailing steins, petiolate, crenate to serrate, glabrous or with eglandular or minute glandular hairs on midrib. Inflorescence terminal, racemose compound; flowers opening in acropetal sequence. Bracts opposite, decussate, or alternate above, with transverse wrinkle at base. Flowers protogynous. Calyx lobes imbricate, 4-5, the anterior pair sometimes united, the posterior lobe shorter or absent. Corolla tube cylindric to funnelform, veins to lobes branching near base of tube. Corolla lobes 4. Stamens 2; filaments erect, inserted in basal half of corolla tube; anthers apiculate, yellow or cream. Nectarial disk ciliate or glandular-ciliate, rarely glabrous. Ovary truncate or emarginate. Locules 2; placenta hemispherical with ovules scattered on surface; ovules hemitropous; stigma capitate or 2-4-lobed, often protruding from bud. Capsule turgid to broadly angustiseptate, thickwalled, dehiscing septicidally to base and loculicidally to varying depth. Seeds few, (1—)3—6 per locule, fusiform to irregular, compressed, smooth, or rugulose on back, winged at ends or at proximal end and narrowly around edges.
Suffrutices, Parahebe primo adspectu similes, a Parahebe, Chionohebe, Derwentia, et Hebe inflorescentiis terminalibus, floribus proterogynis, staminibus erectis, antheris luteolis, ovulis hemitropis, seminibus fusiformibus vel irregularibus, alatis different.
Softly woody small shrubs, or prostrate mat or cushion plants. Stems prostrate, decumbent, suberect to erect, woody or semiwoody, rooting at lower nodes when in contact with the ground; stem hairs bifarious or uniform or absent, white or fulvous, straight or curved. Leaves sessile or petiolate, decussate, but sometimes pseudodistichous on prostrate stems, entire, crenate, serrate, or shallowly pinnatifid. Shoot apex not enclosed in a tight bud of many overlapping leaf pairs, opposite leaves of a pair separating while still quite small (cf. most species of Hebe). Inflorescence axillary, bracteate or bracteolate, a diffuse many-flowered or few-flowered raceme, a pair of flowers, or a solitary bibracteolate flower. Calyx deeply and evenly 4-lobed, or with a smaller fifth lobe, or sometimes lobes in slightly unequal pairs, the posterior longer. Corolla white, sometimes pale pink or blue; tube white or yellow, hairy inside or glabrous, short or moderately long; throat white or with pink or mauve eye; lobes 4 or 5 (rarely 6), unequal. Stamens 2, posterior, anthers dorsifixed, versatile, introrse, usually exserted or borne at throat. Style usually equalling stamen filaments, stigma capitate. Capsule subterete or flattened, angustiseptate, apiculate to obtuse to emarginate, xerochastic or hygrochastic, dehiscing septicidally in most species, and usually to a lesser extent loculicidally as well, rarely only loculicidally. Seeds many, ovate and flattened, or ovoid, small, smooth.
Veronica L.

Fls in terminal or axillary racemes, or solitary and axillary. Calyx deeply 4-(5)-lobed; lobes often unequal with upper 2 smaller. Corolla rotate to campanulate; tube short and much < limb; lobes 4, moderately dissimilar, the upper largest, mostly blue, less commonly pink or white, usually with blue veins. Stamens 2, exserted, spreading. Fr. a loculicidal or, less commonly, septicidal capsule, ± laterally compressed at right angles to septum, smooth or with raised nerves or ribs. Seeds few to fairly numerous, small; wing 0.
