Descriptions
Small half-woody shrub to 40 cm. tall, branches decumbent then erect. Branchlets with fine even ± glandular pubescence, length of internodes 2-4 × diam., often much more immediately below infl. and lvs there sts alternate. Lvs spreading, 2-3 cm. × 13-17 mm.; petiole c. 5 mm. long, pubescent, narrowly winged and channelled; lamina obovate to sub-orbicular, obtuse to subacute, ± fleshy, grey-green, minutely pubescent on margins and midrib and when young on both surfaces; margins crenate-dentate, reddish. Infl. terminal, c. 3-(4) cm. long, composed of us. simple pedunculate spikes of crowded sessile fls. Bracts c. 3 mm. long, broad-ovate, acute, ciliolate and with some pubescence on back. Calyx-lobes c. 3·5 mm. long, acute, ciliolate, anterior pair sts fused and a short posterior one us. present. Corolla pinkish lilac, tube and obtuse lobes c. = calyx; style glab., stigma ± lobed. Capsule erect, > calyx, turgid and ± emarginate at tip, sts with some hairs; seeds narrow-oblong.
Spreading low shrub, 0.1-0.3 m tall. Branches prostrate to decumbent; branchlets brown to grey; vegetative internodes (1—)4—8(—12) mm long; stem pubescence uniform, glandular. Leaves spreading to recurved; lamina obovate to orbicular, coriaceous, flat, (7-)12-25(-30) × (6-)8-17 mm; apex obtuse, rounded, or truncate; base cuneate; margin green or red, rounded, smooth or ciliate to glandular-ciliate on uppermost leaves only, crenate with 3-10 pairs of crenations; adaxial surface with minute twin-headed glandular hairs on midrib, glaucescent to dark green, dull, with dense stomata; abaxial surface glabrous, pale green, dull, with dense stomata; midrib thickened beneath and depressed to grooved above. Petiole narrowly winged, 2-5(-8) mm long. Inflorescence with (50-) 100-150 flowers, 2-4 cm long; rachis 1-3 cm long, glandularpubescent; bracts subopposite to alternate, or opposite and decussate below, becoming alternate above, acute to slightly acuminate, glandular-ciliate, deltoid to narrowly deltoid. Pedicels absent. Calyx divisions equally deep, or with anterior lobes united to 2/3-way to apex. Calyx 4-5 mm long; lobes 5, not all similar, lanceolate to deltoid, acuminate, glandular-ciliate. Corolla 11-13 mm diam., pink at anthesis, white after pollination, throat white or pink; corolla tube 1.5-2.0 mm long, 1.7-2.0 mm wide, slightly expanded in lower half, shorter than calyx, glabrous; corolla lobes glabrous; posterior corolla lobe longer than tube, broadly rhomboid, subacute, erect; lateral corolla lobes elliptic, subacute, suberect to spreading; anterior corolla lobe rhomboid, subacute, spreading. Stamen filaments white, inserted at base of corolla tube, 2.5 mm long. Anthers yellow. Nectarial disk glandular-ciliate, or ciliate, or glabrous. Ovary globose to ellipsoid, obtuse to emarginate, glandular hairy at least on suture, 1.3 × 1.0 mm, 0.9 mm thick. Ovules 15-25 per locule. Style 6-7 mm long, 0.18-0.24 mm thick, glabrous, pink to white. Stigma capitate to globose, white at anthesis, 0.3 mm wide. Capsule angustiseptate to turgid, emarginate, dark brown, (3.0-)3.5- 4.0 × 2.0-2.5 mm, 2.0-2.5 mm thick, glabrous. Loculicidal split of capsule extending ½-¾-way to base. Seeds weakly flattened, narrowly obovoid or fusiform, winged, weakly rugulose on back, pale brown, (1.7-)2.0-2.5 × 0.7-1.1 mm. Chromosome number 2n = 42 (Hair 1967). FL Oct-Nov(-Jan), FT Jan(-Mar).
