Chalara agathidis superficially resembles C. angionacea, but its venter is longer and narrower, its collarette is narrower and darker at its base, and its conidia are longer and narrower.

Occasional aberrant conidia with up to 2 septa, and shorter 1-septate conidia, in each case with unequal cells, were seen in KNZ 72.

The broadly conical fuliginous basal cell is characteristic of C. brunnipes, which is similar to C. austriaca and C. constricta. It is distinct from C. austriaca in its longer phialides, longer venter, minutely asperate collarettes and short clavate, rather than cylindrical, conidia. It can be distinguished from C. constricta by its subcylindrical, rather than lageniform, and longer phialides; subcylindrical and longer venter, minutely asperate collarettes, gradual rather than abrupt transition, and shorter, narrower conidia.

Phialophores solitary or aggregated, straight or variously bent, up to 42 µ long and 4 µ wide at the base, composed of a cylindrical stalk which is pale brown, smooth-walled, indistinctly 1-4-septate; with a terminal phialide. C. curvata resembles C. emodensis and C. scabrida. It differs from C. emodensis in having larger phialides with longer, often curved, collarettes, and in its larger conidium bearing a minute marginal frill at its truncate base. It is distinguished from C. scabrida by its predominantly lageniform phialides with abrupt transition from venter to collarette, and by its longer conidia.

Colony effuse, irregular, brown, hairy, with a downy aspect due to a whitish cover of chains of conidia. Superficial mycelium loosely aggregated; hyphae appearing nodulose due to constriction of the wall at septa, brown and asperate, up to 4 µ wide. Phialophores arising from segments of hyphae, with a short stalk of 1-2 cells, or often reduced to sessile phialides; 40-52 µ long, 4-4.5 µ wide below except for the swollen, asperate, basal cell which is up to 7.5µ wide. Phialides subcylindrical, 33-44 [38.6] µ long, pale brown, becoming lighter at the apex; venter subcylindrical to conic, slightly bulbous in the submedian part, smooth-walled, 13-18 [15.3] x 3.5-4.5 [4.1] µ; collarette cylindrical, smooth, 20-27 (29) [23.3] x 2-2.5 µ; transition from venter to collarette gradual; ratio of mean lengths of collarette/venter = 1.5:1. C. gracilis is distinct from all other species of Chalara by virtue of its slender phialides, narrow venter that is bulbous in the submedian part; and narrow conidia.

Phialophores arising from the stroma, solitary to aggregated, erect, 70-100 µ long and up to 6.5 µ wide at the base; with 1-5 thin septa; brown below but lighter above, smooth-walled, terminating in a phialide. C. inaequalis is distinct from all other known species of Chalara in its unequally 2-celled conidia. It is close to C. cylindrosperma in its phialophore morphology but can be distinguished by its longer phialides, longer collarettes, and its 1-septate conidia bearing basal marginal frills.

Habitat: On dead leaves of Nothofagus menziesii and Podocarpus dacrydioides.

Phialophora dense conferta, recta vel varie flexa, 45-120 µ long., 3-4.5 µ lat. ad basem; cellula,basalis parum inflata, subglobosa vel conica, et usque ad 6.5 µ lat.; multiseptata, pariete laevi et aliquantum contracto ad septa; infra brunnea vel atrobrunnea, supra pallescentia, in phialidem terminantia. Phialides lageniformes, pallide brunneae, laeviae, 21-34 [28] µ long.; venter subcylindraceus, 11-19 [15] x 3.5-4.5 [4] µ; collum cylindraceum, 10-15 [12.7] x 1.5-2 µ; transitio ex ventre ad collum abrupta, raro gradatim; ratio long. colli et ventris = 0.8:1. Phialoconidia in catenas longas extrusa; cylindracea, apice rotundato, base truncata, minutam fimbriam marginalem ferente; unicellularia, hyalina, laevia; 5-8 [6.4] x 1-1.5 µ; ratio conidii long./lat. = 5:1.
C. novaezelandiae resembles C. longipes, but has proportionately shorter and narrower phialides, narrower venters, longer collarettes, and abrupt transition. It also exhibits affinities with C. parvispora, but can be distinguished by its shorter and narrower phialophores, shorter and narrower phialides, shorter and narrower collarettes and longer, narrower conidia.
Colony effuse, pale brown, caespitose. Vegetative mycelium thinly aggregated; hyphae brown, scabrous, 2.5-4 µ wide. Phialophores usually reduced to phialides, or rarely phialides with a short stalk cell. Phialides subcylindrical, rarely lageniform, golden brown and concolorous, 37-47 [41 ] µ long; venter conic or rarely ellipsoidal, rough-walled, 10-16 [13] x 5-9.5 [6.7] µ; collarette cylindrical, rarely obconical, 22-32 [28] x 3-4 (3.5) µ; transition from venter to collarette gradual; ratio of mean lengths of collarette/venter = 2.2:1. Phialoconidia extruded in short chains; cylindrical, apex rounded, base truncate with distinct marginal frill; 1-septate, hyaline, smooth; 15-19 [17] x 2.5-3 [2.7] µ; mean conidium length/width ratio = 6.4:1.

Phialides ampulliform to narrowly conical, with a broad flat base; 18-23 [21] µ long, pale brown and concolorous; venter usually conic, occasionally ellipsoid, 10-12.5 [11] x 3-4 [3.7] µ; collarette cylindrical, 10-11 [10.3] x 1.5 µ; transition from venter to collarette gradual, rarely abrupt; ratio of mean lengths of collarette/venter = 0.9:1. Phialoconidia extruded in easily dispersible chains; cylindrical with truncate ends, unicellular, hyaline, smooth, 3.5-6 [4.8] x (1-) 1.5 µ; mean conidium length/width ratio = 3.4:1.

Phialides ampulliformes vel anguste conicae, base lata et plana; 18-23[21] µ long., pallide brunneae et concolorae; venter plerumque conicus, interdum ellipsoideus, 10-12.5 [11] x 3-4 [3.7] µ; collum cylindraceum, 10-11 [10.3] x 1.5 µ; transitio ex ventre ad collum gradatim, raro abrupta; ratio long. colli et ventris = 0.9:1. Phialoconidia in catenas facile dispergendas extrusa; cylindracea, utrinque truncata, unicellularia, hyalina, laevia, 3.5-6 [4.8] x (1-) 1.5 µ; ratio conidii long./lat. = 3.4:1.
C. sessilis superficially resembles C. constricta, but differs by its ampulliform to narrowly conical and shorter phialides, collarette concolorous with venter, transition unmarked by a constriction in the wall, and cylindrical conidia with truncate ends.

Phialides urceolate, rarely lageniform, 49-65 [58] µ long; venter narrowly obconic, pale brown, smooth, 19-26 [24] x 6-7 [6.6] µ; collarette cylindrical, brown in the basal part but paler at its apex, smooth, 28-40 [35] x 2.5-3 [2.8] µ; transition from venter to collarette abrupt; ratio of mean lengths of collarette/venter = 1.4:1. Phialoconidia extruded singly or in short chains; cylindrical, apex rounded, base truncate with a minute marginal frill; 1-septate, hyaline, smooth; 11-19 [16] x 2-2.5 [2.3] µ; mean conidium length/width ratio = 6.7:1.

Phialoconidia singulatim vel in catenas breves extrusa; cylindracea, apice rotundato, base truncata, fimbriam minutam marginalem ferente; 1-septata, hyalina, laevia; 11-19 [ 16] x 2-2.5 [2.3] µ; ratio conidii long./lat. = 6.7:1.
C. tubifera resembles C. urceolata but has smaller phialides, a shorter, narrower and basally dark collarette, and narrower conidia bearing basal frills.
