Chalara novae-zelandiae Nag Raj & W.B. Kendr. 1975

Specimens examined: 1) PDD 32848 [Holotype], on leaf of N. menziesii, Governor's Bush Tr., Mt. Cook Nat. Pk., N.Z., 25.IV.1974, B. Kendrick (KNZ 583b); 2) PDD 32849, on dead leaf of P. dacrydioides, Big Tree Tr., Peel Forest Pk., Canterbury Prov., N.Z., 26.IV.1974, B.K. (KNZ 682b).
Colony effuse, brown or dark brown, hairy. Phialophores densely crowded, erect or variously bent; 45-120 µ long, 3-4.5 µ wide at the base; basal cell slightly swollen, subglobose to conical and up to 6.5 µ wide; multiseptate, wall smooth and somewhat constricted at the septa which are thinner in the distal part; brown to dark brown below, becoming lighter above; with a terminal phialide; lateral proliferation of phialophore common. Phialides lageniform, pale brown, smooth-walled, 21-34 [28] µ long; venter subcylindrical, 11-19 [15] x 3.5-4.5 [4] µ; collarette cylindrical, 10-15 [12.7] x 1.5-2 µ;transition from venter to collarette abrupt, rarely gradual; ratio of mean lengths of collarette/venter = 0.8:1. Phialoconidia extruded in long chains; cylindrical, apex rounded, base truncate with a minute marginal frill; unicellular, hyaline, smooth; 5-8 [6,.4] x 1-1.5p; mean conidium length/width ratio =5:1.
Known distribution: New Zealand.
Habitat: On dead leaves of Nothofagus menziesii and Podocarpus dacrydioides.
Colonia effusa, brunnea vel atrobrunnea, velutina. Phialophora dense conferta, recta vel varie flexa, 45-120 µ long., 3-4.5 µ lat. ad basem; cellula, basalis parum inflata, subglobosa vel conica, et usque ad 6.5 µ lat.; multiseptata, pariete laevi et aliquantum contracto ad septa; infra brunnea vel atrobrunnea, supra pallescentia, in phialidem terminantia. Phialides lageniformes, pallide brunneae, laeviae, 21-34 [28] µ long.; venter subcylindraceus, 11-19 [15] x 3.5-4.5 [4] µ; collum cylindraceum, 10-15 [12.7] x 1.5-2 µ; transitio ex ventre ad collum abrupta, raro gradatim; ratio long. colli et ventris = 0.8:1. Phialoconidia in catenas longas extrusa; cylindracea, apice rotundato, base truncata, minutam fimbriam marginalem ferente; unicellularia, hyalina, laevia; 5-8 [6.4] x 1-1.5 µ; ratio conidii long./lat. = 5:1.
C. novaezelandiae resembles C. longipes, but has proportionately shorter and narrower phialides, narrower venters, longer collarettes, and abrupt transition. It also exhibits affinities with C. parvispora, but can be distinguished by its shorter and narrower phialophores, shorter and narrower phialides, shorter and narrower collarettes and longer, narrower conidia.
