Chalara brunnipes Nag Raj & W.B. Kendr. 1975

Specimens examined: 1) PDD 32845 [Holotype] ; Cascade Falls Tr., Urewera Nat. Pk., N.Z., 24.III.1974, B. Kendrick (KNZ 526); 2) PDD 32846, L. Waikereite Tr., Orewera Nat. Pk., N.Z., 23.III.1974, B. Kendrick (KNZ 548).
Colony effuse, scattered, hairy. Stroma lacking. Phialophores scattered to gregarious, short, erect or bent, 39-45 µ long, 0-2-septate, with a subglobose to broadly conical, brown or smoky brown, sometimes asperate, basal cell, 4.5-8 µ long and 6-9 µ wide. Terminal phialide subcylindrical, 25-34 [30] µ long, pale brown, often slightly darker at the base of the collarette; venter subcylindrical, 14-19 [16.5] x 3.5-5.5 [4.2] µ; collarette usually narrow-obconic, occasionally cylindrical, minutely asperate, 11-15 [13.6] x 1.5-2.5 [2] µ; transition from venter to collarette gradual; ratio of mean lengths of collarette and venter = 0.8:1. Phialoconidia extruded in long chains; short clavate with a truncate base, unicellular, hyaline, smooth, 3.5-5 [4.3] x 1.5 µ; mean conidium length/width ratio = 2.8:1.
Known distribution: New Zealand.
Habitat: On dead leaves of Nothofagus fusca.
Colonia effusa, dissita, velutina. Stroma nullum. Phialophora sparsa vel gregaria, curta, recta vel flexa, 39-45 µ long., 0-2-septata; cellula basali subglobosa vel late conica, brunnea vel fuliginea, interdum aspera, 4.5-8 µ long. et 6-9 µ lat., praedita. Phialis terminalis subcylindracea, 25-34 [30] µ long., pallide brunnea, saepe ad colli basem leniter fuscescens; venter subcylindraceus, 14-19 [16.5] x 3.5-5.5 [4.2] µ; collum plerumque anguste obconicum, interdum cylindraceum, minute asperum, 11-15 [13.6] x 1.5-2.5 [2] µ; transitio ex ventre ad collum gradatim; ratio long. colli et ventris = 0.8:1. Phialoconidia in catenas longas extrusa; breviclavata, base truncata; unicellularia, hyalina, laevia, 3.5-5 [4.3] x 1.5 µ; ratio conidii long./lat. = 2.8:1.
The broadly conical fuliginous basal cell is characteristic of C. brunnipes, which is similar to C. austriaca and C. constricta. It is distinct from C. austriaca in its longer phialides, longer venter, minutely asperate collarettes and short clavate, rather than cylindrical, conidia. It can be distinguished from C. constricta by its subcylindrical, rather than lageniform, and longer phialides; subcylindrical and longer venter, minutely asperate collarettes, gradual rather than abrupt transition, and shorter, narrower conidia.
