Chalara tubifera Nag Raj & W.B. Kendr. 1975

Colony effuse, brown to dark brown, hairy. Vegetative hyphae pale brown, smooth, up . to 2.5 µ wide. Phialophores solitary or gregarious, erect or variously bent, 65-220 µ long, 5-6 µ wide below, except for the basal cell which is broadly conic, lobed and up to 11 µ wide; few- to many-septate; dark brown below, becoming lighter above, smooth. Phialides urceolate, rarely lageniform, 49-65 [58] µ long; venter narrowly obconic, pale brown, smooth, 19-26 [24] x 6-7 [6.6] µ; collarette cylindrical, brown in the basal part but paler at its apex, smooth, 28-40 [35] x 2.5-3 [2.8] µ; transition from venter to collarette abrupt; ratio of mean lengths of collarette/venter = 1.4:1. Phialoconidia extruded singly or in short chains; cylindrical, apex rounded, base truncate with a minute marginal frill; 1-septate, hyaline, smooth; 11-19 [16] x 2-2.5 [2.3] µ; mean conidium length/width ratio = 6.7:1.
Known distribution: New Zealand.
Habitat: On dead leaves of Knightia excelsa.
Colonia effusa, brunnea vel atrobrunnea, velutina. Hyphae vegetativae pallide brunneae, laeves, usque ad 2.5 µ lat. Phialophora solitaria vel gregaria, recta vel varie flexa, 65-220 µ long., infra 5-6 µ lat., praeter cellulam basalem late conicam, lobatam et usque ad 11 µ lat.; pauci- vel pluri-septata; infra atrobrunnea, supra pallescentia laevia. Phialides urceolatae, raro lageniformes, 49-65 [58] µ long.; venter anguste obconicus, pallide brunneus, laevis, 19-26 [24] x 6-7 [6.6] µ; collum cylindraceum, basaliter fuscum sed supra pallescens, laeve, 28-40 [35] x 2.5-3 [2.8] µ; transitio ex ventre ad collum abrupta; ratio long. colli et ventris = 1.4:1. Phialoconidia singulatim vel in catenas breves extrusa; cylindracea, apice rotundato, base truncata, fimbriam minutam marginalem ferente; 1-septata, hyalina, laevia; 11-19 [ 16] x 2-2.5 [2.3] µ; ratio conidii long./lat. = 6.7:1.
C. tubifera resembles C. urceolata but has smaller phialides, a shorter, narrower and basally dark collarette, and narrower conidia bearing basal frills.
Specimen examined: PDD 32871 [Holotype] Hongi's Tr. Scenic Reserve, N.Z., 12.I.1974, B. Kendrick (KNZ 136).
