Chalara nothofagi Nag Raj & W.B. Kendr. 1975

Colony effuse, brown to dark brown, hairy. Superficial hyphae thinly aggregated, pale brown, smooth. Phialophores solitary or in lax clusters, erect or variously bent; 115-168 µ long, 5-6 µ wide at the base; basal cell slightly inflated, subglobose and up to 7.5 µ diam.; multiseptate, brown or dark brown below, becoming lighter above; with a terminal phialide. Phialides lageniform, 48-58 [53] µ long, pale brown; venter subcylindrical, 20-27 [23.6] x 6-8.5 [7.4] µ; collarette cylindrical, 26-33 [29] x 3.5-4 µ; transition from venter to collarette abrupt; ratio of mean lengths of collarette/venter = 1.2:1. Phialoconidia extruded singly or in short chains; cylindrical, apex rounded, base truncate with a minute marginal frill; unicellular, hyaline, smooth; 13-17 (-18) [15] x 2.5-3 [2.7] µ; mean conidium length/ width ratio = 5.5:1.
Known distribution: New Zealand.
Habitat: On dead leaves of Nothofagus solandri var. cliffortioides.
Colonia effusa, brunnea vel atrobrunnea, velutina. Hyphae superficiales pallide brunneae, laeves, tenuiter aggregatae. Phialophora solitaria vel laxe conferta, recta vel varia flexa, 115-168 µ long., 5-6 µ lat. ad basem, cellula basali parum inflata, subglobosa et usque ad 7.5 µ diam.; multiseptata, infra brunnea vel atrobrunnea, supra pallescentia, in phialidem terminantia. Phialides lageniformes, 48-58 [53] µ long., pallide brunneae; venter subcylindraceus, 20-27 [23.6] x 6-8.5 [7.4] µ; collum cylindraceum, 26-33 [29] x 3.5-4 µ; transitio ex ventre ad collum abrupta; ratio long. colli et ventris = 1.2:1. Phialoconidia singulatim vel in catenas breves extrusa; cylindracea, apice rotundato, base truncata, minutam fimbriam marginalem ferente; unicellularia, hyalina, laevia, 13-17 (-18) [15] x 2.5-3 [2.7] µ; ratio conidii long./lat. = 5.5:1.
