Polyporus leucocreas Cooke 1879

On charred wood.
Pileo e carnoso suberoso, ungulato, glabro, albido, demum pallido, cute rivuloso-fatiscente, intus niveo, spongioso, tenae.i; hymenio convexo, rimoso ; poris angulatis, minimis, brevibus, albis. (vix P. betulinus.)
Substance snowy-white, not at all fragile as in P. officinalis, but firm and tough ; pileus 6 inches across, 4 inches high.

Piptoporus portentosus (Berk.) G. Cunn. 1965

Cunningham (1965) stated that collections of this species were earlier identified as Polyporus eucalyptorum Fr., but, as the type of this species is missing, the species cannot be identified. In New Zealand in indigenous forests it occurs only on Nothofagus spp., where it causes a cubical heart rot. It has also been collected on a pear tree (Pyrus communis) in Hawke's Bay.

Laetiporus portentosus (Berk.) Rajchenb. 1995

Type: Lignicolous Fungi; Description: Basidiomata annual, solitary, spongy, attached by an apical or lateral stem-like base, often becoming detached soon after reaching maturity. Pilei ungulate or bell-shaped, 70–350 mm wide, 50–150 mm thick. Pileus surface glabrous or finely tomentose-reticulate, greyish white to ochraceous to tobacco brown, covered with a delicate membrane which when dry is brittle and peels away readily, margin entire or lobed. Pore surface plane or slightly convex, creviced when old, straw- or honey-coloured; pores large, 1–3 per mm. Context white, soft and crumbling. Hyphal system dimitic. Basidiospores globose or subglobose, 7–9 × 7–8 μm, smooth, hyaline.
Distribution: Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Taupo, Wellington, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Buller, Marlborough Sounds, Mid Canterbury, Dunedin.; 1st Record: Cunningham (1927: as Polyporus eucalyptorum).
Significance: Causes a cubical brown heart rot of little significance.; Host(s): Eucalyptus sp., Nothofagus fusca, N. solandri var. solandri, N. truncata.

taxonomic status
This taxon requires a new genus in the polyporaceae. The NZ taxon s related to, but not the same as the Australian version. Type from Western Australia. GenBank contains at least two misidentified sequences. JAC]
