Descriptions
Aecidium monocystis Berk. 1855
The following species and form-species have been recorded as occurring in New Zealand, but, as I have not seen specimens, I am unable to give descriptions; moreover, as in most instances the published descriptions are so fragmentary as to be useless for comparative purposes, I have not included them here.
(g.) Aecidium monocystis Berk., Fl. N.Z., vol. 2, p. 196, 1855.
Host: Phyllachne Colensoi Berggr. (= Helophyllum Colensoi Hook. f.).
McAlpine (1906, p. 197) states that this is common on Abrotanella forsterioides Hook. f. in the vicinity of Hobart, and doubts the determination of the host as given above; he claims that it is scarcely likely that the same species would occur on hosts belonging to the Compositae and Candolleaceae (= Stylidieae). Mr. Rodway, Government Botanist, Hobart, has written to me to the same effect; he believes that the species was in error stated to have been collected in New Zealand, and was really collected in Tasmania. Although Abrotanella occurs in New Zealand, all the species are endemic; so that the matter must remain at issue until the original host is correctly determined.

Aecidium monocystis Berk. 1855
McNabb recently recorded this rust from New Zealand. He followed MacAlpine (1906) in considering that the host of the type collection from Tasmania had been misidentified; the type needs further investigation, as Hooker (1867) listed it as a Colenso collection from New Zealand, not Tasmania. Cunningham (1931a) listed this species as an excluded species.

Aecidium monocystis Berk. 1855
Campbell Island (McKenzie and Foggo 1989), Mt. Honey, on Abrotanella rosulata (Hook. f.) Hook. f. [Asteraceae], January 1981, M.N. Foggo (PDD 43969 – I).
This rust was described from Tasmania (see McKenzie and Foggo 1989). In New Zealand it is known from only two localities: Campbell Island, and from a specimen collected in January 1953 on Abrotanella pusilla (Hook. f.) Hook. f. in the Tararua Ranges, North Island.
