Descriptions
Melampsoridium betulinum Kleb. 1899
Host: Betula alba L. On leaves. Herb. No. 596. II, III. Hanmer (Canterbury), W. Morrison! 2 March, 1922.
0. Spermogones amphigenous, numerous, scattered, flattened, inconspicuous.
I. Aecidia hypophyllous, solitary, or in rows parallel to the midrib, reddish-orange. Peridia elliptical, up to 1 mm. high, 1 mm. long, margin irregularly torn, tinted. Spores subglobose or elliptical, 16-25 X 12-16 mmm.; epispore hyaline, minutely and closely verruculose, 1-1-5 mmm. thick, slightly thinner and more smooth on one side.
II. Uredosori hypophyllous, immersed, scattered, orbicular, 0.1 mm. diam. Peridia flattened-globose, dehiscing by an apical pore. Spores elliptical or subclavate, 20-35 X 10-15 mmm.; epispore hyaline, sparsely and somewhat coarsely echinulate, smooth towards the apex, 1 mmm. thick; germ-pores indistinct.
III. Teleutosori hypophyllous, immersed, scattered, orbicular, 0.5 mm. diam., chestnut-brown, indehiscent. Spores compacted into a flattened crust, prismatic, 35-45 X 10-15 mmm.; apex and base obtusely rounded; epispore tinted brown, smooth, 1 mmm. thick; germ-pore indistinct.

Distribution: Europe; Asia; North America.
The host is an introduced species, The aecidia occur on Larix spp. Plowright (1890) first worked out the connection between the aecidium on Larix and the uredo- and teleutospores on Betula. The teleutospores germinate the season following their production.
Melampsoridium betulinum Kleb. 1899
Both host and rust are introduced; the host is a common cultigen occasionally grown in the South Island in plantations. Herbarium records at Plant Diseases Division show That on Betula pendula the uredospore stage was common throughout New Zealand: the aecidial stage on Larix has not been collected in New Zealand.
Melampsoridium betulinum Kleb. 1899
Type: Rust and Smut Fungi; Description: Uredinia solitary, scattered, circular, yellow, 0.1–0.2 mm in diameter, in orange spots; on the lower surfaces of leaves. Urediniospores ellipsoid or subclavate, 20–35 × 10–17 μm, sparsely echinulate but smooth at the apex. Telia solitary, scattered, circular, brown to dark chestnut brown, up to 0.5 mm in diameter; on the lower surfaces of leaves. Teliospores in a palisade-like layer, prismatic, rounded at both ends, 35–45 × 10–15 μm, tinted brown.
Distribution: Auckland, Waikato, Taupo, Wanganui, Hawkes Bay, Nelson, Buller, Marlborough, North Canterbury, Mid Canterbury, Dunedin, Southland.; 1st Record: Robinson (1919: as Melampsoridium betulinae).
Significance: Severe infection may lead to premature defoliation. This rust is very common but seldom causes any significant damage. The aecial stage has not been recorded on Larix in New Zealand.; Host(s): Betula pendula.
