Perithecia gregarious, globose 0-5-0-8min. dark red, brown, vinpiceous irregularly tuberculate.. ostiole papillate, perithecial wall 501, thick, pseudoparenchymatous but structure masked by thickened densely pigmented walls; tubercles hyaline, pseudoparenchymatous, cells thin walled and hyaline 10-12µm diameter. Asci elliptical 95-140 x 10-16µm 8 spored, spores biseriate or obliquely uniseriate, pseudo-paraphyses evanescent. Spores one-septate, elliptical or naviculate, sometimes falcate 30-42 x 9-121, smooth, hyaline.
New Zealand.
Olearia avieenniaefolia Hook. f.
Perithecia gregaria, globoso 0-5-0 -8 mru., brunueo-vinosa, inaequale tuberculata; ostiolo hapillato; pariete perithecii 50/-, crasso; pseudoparenchymato sed structura occulta parietibus cellulorum den¬satis et solide tinctis. Asci elliptici 95-140 x 10-1.6~t, evanescentes. Sporae uniseptatae, ellipticae vel naviculatae 30-42 x 9-12,., loves, hyalinae.
A species easily identified by its large elliptical spores and dense perithecial wall with small scale-like tubercles. When immature perithecia are smaller and scarlet.
LOCALITY: Westland, Waiho.
Type: Corticolous Fungi; Description: Ascomata perithecial, gregarious, globose, dark reddish brown, irregularly warty, 0.5–0.8 mm in diameter, ostiole papillate, superficial; on bark on stems. Asci elliptical, 95–140 × 10–16 m. Ascospores elliptical, 1-septate, 30–42 × 9–12 em, smooth, hyaline. Macroconidia cylindrical, 1–5-septate, 45–80 × 6–8 m, smooth, hyaline. Microconidia elliptical, 0-septate, 3–6 × 2–3 m, smooth, hyaline, in slimy heads.
Distribution: Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Taranaki, Gisborne, Westland, Stewart Island.; 1st Record: Dingley (1951: as Nectria westlandica).
Notes: Although Brayford et al. (2004) did not find any microconidia, Dingley (1957) recorded them as being common.
Significance: None.; Host(s): Beilschmiedia tawa, Coprosma lucida, Dacrydium cupressinum, Dysoxylum spectabile, Griselinia littoralis, Hoheria populnea, Metrosideros robusta, Nothofagus menziesii, Olearia avicenniifolia, Pseudopanax arboreus, P. crassifolius, Raukaua simplex var. simplex, Rhopalostylis sapida.

Thelonectria westlandica (Dingley) P. Chaverri & C. Salgado 2011

Notes. Thelonectria westlandica has a close phylogenetic relationship with species in the T. coronat a and T. veuillotiana complexes; however, it does not display the typical mammiform morphology of the perithecial apex, and has an outer layer of warted cells on the perithecial wall. This species has been collected only in New Zealand. The colony growth in culture is among the slowest in the genus Thelonectria, and together with T. trachosa these species exhibit slow growth at temperatures above 20 °C, however, faster growth at temperatures below 20 °C, suggestive of the prevalent temperatures of the geographical locations where these species are found.
