Named in honour of Thomas Kirk (1828–1898), Chief Conservator of State Forests in New Zealand (1863–1898), author of The Forest Flora of New Zealand (1889) and The Students’ Flora of New Zealand and the Outlying Islands (1899), and who first collected Isoetes in New Zealand.

Isoetes kirkii A.Braun
Submerged, axis short, deeply 3-lobed; lvs up to 30, 5 cm. to 3 dm. long, filiform, pale green. Sporangia broadly oblong, c. 3 mm. long. Megaspores white, studded with minute, unequal tubercles; microspores very ∞, minute.
