taxonomic status
pro parte. Cunningham 1944, p. 67, placed N.Z. material of Hymenogaster pachydermis, including the type collection, (Cunningham 1096), in synonymy under Hysterangium sclerodermum. There are major differences between the descriptions of these two spp.; Cunningham 1944, p. 68, queried the accuracy of Zeller & Dodge's description in relation to N.Z. material, but his criticism is not supported by Zeller & Dodge's FIG. 27, of spores from the N.Z. type collection. Beaton, Pegler & Young 1985b, p. 586, disputed Cunningham's synonymy, and stated that an authentic collection (Zeller 2260) of Hymenogaster pachydermis is a typical Chamonixia; however, the appropriateness of their new combination lacks full confirmation, because they apparently failed to examine the type collection (or any other N.Z. material under this name).
