Descriptions
Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissl. 1912
This study did not support the taxonomic framework of Simmons (2007) where A. alternata, Alternaria tenuissima, and Alternaria mali are considered distinct taxa. This supports findings in the citrus pathosystem, where two evolutionary lineages contained ten morphologically described species ( Stewart et al. 2014). The morphologically described A. tenuissima and A. mali species in Simmons (2007) possess very similar morphological characters including overlapping ranges of spore characters and produce similar chains of spores. These results indicate that A. mali is a re-description of the morphological species A. tenuissima. Isolates possessing an A. alternata-like morphology have been described as rare in the environment ( Simmons and Roberts, 1993 and Simmons, 1999) and it has been suggested that most identifications of A. alternata are in fact misidentifications of A. tenuissima Simmons (2007). It may be the case that A. alternata does not represent a distinct taxon within the A. alternata species group but instead represents a combination of morphological characters possible within those possible in a single A. tenuissima lineage.
Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissl. 1912
Both Kidd (1929) and Brien (1934) described Alternaria tenuis as a storage rot of apples; it is also found associated with discrete lesions on unripe fruits. Morton (1964) described it as a saprophyte on Arthropodium cirrhatum, Beta vulgaris, Brassica napus var. napobrassica, B. oleracea var. botrytis, B. oleracea var. capitata, B. rapa, Callistephus chinensis, Daucus carota var. saliva, Hibiscus esculentus, Lolium perenne, Lycopersicon esculentum, Medicago sativa, Pyrus communis, Ribes uva crispa var. saliva, Solanum nigrum, S. tuberosum, Trifolium repens, Triticum aestivum, and Ulex europeus. It is of minor economic importance.
Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissl. 1912
Type: Foliicolous Fungi; Description: Mycelium black to olivaceous black. Conidiophores in small groups or solitary, straight or flexuous, olivaceous to golden brown, smooth, up to 50 μm long. Conidia obclavate, obpyriform, ovoid or ellipsoidal, often with a short beak, formed in long, often branched chains, with up to 8 transverse and several longitudinal or oblique septa, 20–63 × 9–18 μm, verruculose, pale to mid golden brown.
Distribution: Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Wanganui, Wellington, Hawkes Bay, Nelson, Marlborough, Mid Canterbury.; 1st Record: Kidd (1929: as Alternaria tenuis).
Significance: A very common saprobe found on many plants. It causes a storage rot in apples, which is of minor significance (Kidd 1929).; Host(s): Actinidia deliciosa, Malus ×domestica, Prunus armeniaca.
Type: Foliicolous Fungi; Description: Mycelium olivaceous. Conidiophores in groups or solitary, straight or flexuous, pale brown to mid brown, smooth, up to 115 μm long. Conidia obclavate, or with the body of the conidium ellipsoidal tapering gradually to the beak which is up to half the length of the conidium, straight or slightly curved, solitary or in short chains, with 4–7 transverse and several longitudinal and oblique septa, 22–95 × 8–19 μm, smooth to minutely verruculose, pale to mid golden brown.
Distribution: Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Marlborough.; 1st Record: Johnston & McKenzie (1982).
Significance: Of minor importance.; Host(s): Pseudopanax sp., Vaccinium corymbosum.
