Russula atrovirens also gives a distinctive green colour reaction of the pileus to NH4OH and the spores are densely verrucose. It belongs in section Rigidae Fr. and is possibly best placed in subsection Amoeninae Sing. as defined by Singer ( 1962). Considerable variation in colours of both pileus and stipe occurs in this species. The green colours of the pileus are not always dominant in fresh material, but quickly appear when fructifications are dried.

The firm context which slowly darkens on exposure to air and regularly arranged lamellulae indicate that this species belongs in section Compactae, subsection Compactae, as defined by Shaffer (1962). Russula griseobrunnea may be distinguished from the other New Zealand representative of subsection Compactae by the slowly darkening context, mild taste, and salmon pink reaction to FeSO4

Pileus in forma brevis infundibuli 5-10.5 cm diam., griseoviridis, viscidus cum areolatis pannis; margines radialibus rimis fissi, non pectinati. Lamellae liberae ad adnexas ad 7 mm altae, pallide cremeo-albae; lamellulae rarae. The distinctive cuticular structure indicates that R. griseoviridis belongs in section Rigidae Fr. subsection Virescentinae Sing. as defined by Singer (1962). The epicutis of young fructifications soon ruptures forming areolate patches seated on the continuous subcutis. These epicuticular patches resemble velar remnants.

Young fruiting bodies of this species have not been collected, but if .R. inquinata follows the pattern of other species in the subsection, they are probably pallid in colour, darkening with maturity.

The blackening fructifications, firm context, and regularly arranged lamellulae indicate that R. inquinata belongs to section Compactae subsection Nigricantes Bat. as defined by Singer (1962). Russula inquinata is close to R. adusta (Pers. ex Fr.) Fr. but differs in the acrid taste, and the greyish green reaction to FeSO4 Russula adusta is a Northern Hemisphere species restricted to coniferous habitats. It belongs to the Compactae subsection of Russula as defined by Shaffer (1962).

Russula macrocystidiata belongs in section Rigidae and, like R. tawai, is possibly best assigned to subsection Amoeninae (Singer 1962). It resembles R. tawai in many respects, but may be distinguished by the white to creamy white lamellae, white context, thinner walled pleurocystidia projecting to 70 µm beyond the basidia, and the slightly different spore ornamentation.

This species belongs to the section Rigidae and is possibly best placed in subsection Amoeninae as defined by Singer (1962), but spore print is slightly coloured.

Collections associated with Nothofagus spp. perhaps do not entirely agree in spore ornamentation with those from under Leptospermum, and in their chemical relation with KOH, but for the time being it seems best to include them under the same species.
