What has been called bovei var. microspora in New Zealand (a small spored version of A. bovei, that can be found on Nothofagus) is genetically distinct from A. areolatum, an Asian species considered a synonym of A. bovei var. microspora. Note that Ju & Rogers regard var microspora as an Asian species that is not found on Nothofagus. [PRJ, 2024]

taxonomic status
Regarded as synonym of A. areolatum on basis of epitpye selected for its basionym Rosellinia areolata from Thailand. But R. areolata was described from Fagus from Japan.
