Stock hard, woody, deeply descending; branchlets very densely compacted; lamina ± 25-30 × 4-5 mm., linear-subulate, apiculate, rigid; sheath c. 15 × 7 mm., sparsely hairy without; bracts up to 20 × 1-2 mm. long, crowded.

Saldivia 2024 puts the varieties into synonymy, but they differ in leaf lamina width and leaf lamina shape. Var. macmahonii on Mt Stokes has leaves 7.0-8.5 mm wide, and the leaf lamina is widest below the leaf apex (very slightly obovate). Var. hadfieldii on the Richmond Range has leaves (3.2-)4.0-5.2(-5.5) mm wide and the leaf lamina is widest at the base with the margins either parallel or slightly tapering for most of the lamina. There is an ecological difference between the two varieties as well,
