t. 1
John Frederick Miller (J.F.Mill.) published Sophora tetraptera in his serial work titled Icones animalium et plantarum (Illustrations of Animals and Plants).Specifically, the description and accompanying illustration appeared in 1780 under Plate 1 (t. 1). Miller based his work on the physical specimens and drawings brought back to England by Sir Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander. They collected the large-leaved kōwhai in 1769 from Tolaga Bay and Anaura Bay during Captain James Cook's first voyage to New Zealand on the Endeavour. Because John Frederick Miller's father, John Sebastian Mueller (J.S.Muell.) (who changed his name to John Miller), also worked closely on these botanical circles, historical records sometimes muddy the title pages. However, the publication Icones animalium et plantarum remains the exact place where the name was formally established into botanical nomenclature.
