Hebe tairawhiti B.D.Clarkson & Garn.-Jones

Hermaphrodite shrub or small tree up to 4.5 m tall. Old stems brown; branches erect; mature branchlets red-brown to black, green when young, glabrous; internodes 7—15 mm long. Leaf bud sinus absent. Leaves sessile, recurved; lamina linear to linear-lanceolate, tapering evenly from broad base, subcoriaceous, dull green with broad yellow midrib above, pale green beneath, 60—150 × 6—11 mm; hairs sparse: microscopic eglandular hairs along margins and minute glandular hairs covering adaxial surface; apex acute; base abruptly cuneate; midrib thickened beneath; margin entire or with very obscure distant teeth, yellow, rounded, not thickened. Inflorescence lateral, unbranched, racemose, 12—15 cm long; flowers crowded, spiralled to more or less verticillate. Apical flowers opening last. Peduncle, rachis, and pedicels very densely eglandular puberulent; peduncle (15-) 18-25 mm long. Bracts narrowly deltoid, acute, eglandular-hairy abaxially and ciliolate with both glandular and eglandular hairs, shorter than pedicels. Pedicels erecto-patent to patent, 1.3-2 mm long. Flowers weakly sweet-scented, weakly protandrous or not dichogamous. Calyx lobes lanceolate, acute, 1.8—2 × 0.5—0.7 mm; abaxial surface with mixed glandular and eglandular cilia; margins membranous, ciliolate. Corolla pale violet, fading white; tube 3-3.5 mm long, expanded in lower half, longer than calyx, short hairy inside; lobes erect, elliptic or oblong, cuneate at base, obtuse, 2-3.5 × 1 mm. Anthers violet, subacute, 2-2.3 mm long; filaments white, 5 mm long, straight in bud, curving outwards after anthesis. Nectarial disc glabrous, fleshy, green. Style white, glabrous, 3.5-4 mm long; stigma subcapitate. Ovary ovoid or ellipsoid, glabrous, 1— 1.2 × 0.6 mm; ovules 10—12 per locule, marginal on a discoid placenta. Capsule dark brown, 3 × 1.5 mm, septicidal to base, loculicidal to half length. Seeds straw yellow to pale brown, ellipsoid or discoid, flattened, smooth, (0.8—)1—1.2 × (0.5-)0.7-1 mm.
Frutex vel arbuscula hermaphrodita usque ad 4.5 m alta; Hebes strictae affinis, a qua imprimis differt foliis longis angustis sessilibus, e basi lata gradatim angustatis, in costa lata paginae abaxialis luteis, a colore laminae viridi discedentibus; a H. parviflora differt laminis longioribus, lobis corollae erectis vel erectopatentibus, angustis.
