Rhizoma breve, repens, usque ad 6 cm longum, paleis fuscis subulatis usque ad 10 × 4 mm. Stipes 2.5-13 cm longus, 0.25-2 mm diametro, viridis vel stramineus, paleis subulatis usque ad 2.5 × 1 mm. Lamina plerumque anguste triangulata vel anguste ovata, interdum triangulata vel ovata, 3.5—22 × 1.5—7 cm, atroviridis, tenuis, paleis distantibus, plerumque bipinnata, interdum bipinnatifida vel tripinnatifida. Rhachis viridis, paleis subulatis distantibus. Pinnae primariae 4—14(17)-jugatae, superiores anguste ellipticae vel ellipticae vel ovatae, apicem versus ordinate decrescentes, inferiores ovatae, longissimae 1-4 × 0.5—1.7 cm infra medium laminae. Pinnae secundariae pinnarum primariarum superiorum +/- lineares vel ellipticae, integrae vel incisae, apicibus acutis vel obtusis; pinnarum primariarum inferiorum anguste vel late ellipticae, incisae vel ex parte divisae, apicibus obtusis, illae longissimae 0.5—1.0 × 0.1-0.7 cm. Sori extensi secus segmenta ultima, 1.5—3 mm longi, marginibus indusiorum integns. Sporae (41.5)44.4-51.5(57.4) × (29.3)33- 38.5(45.2) |im; perisporae anastomosis profunde alatis, in lacunis humilibus trabeculis.

Etymology
From the Latin Cimmeriorum (of the Cimmerii, a mythical people said by Homer to inhabit a remote region of mist and darkness, which has given rise to the proverbial expression “Cimmerian darkness”), a reference to the habitat of this species.
