OTHER SPECIMENS EXAMINED. NEW ZEALAND. TAUPO: Tongariro Natl. Park, Ketetahi Springs Tr., on Celmisia spectabilis, 21 Mar 1984, P. R. Johnston D123 & E. H. C. McKenzie (PDD 49137). WELLINGTON: Tararua Ra., Pukemoremore Summit, on Celmisia spectabilis, 10 Feb 1985, P.R.Johnston D102, (PDD 49104), vic. Dundas Hut, 14 Feb 1985, P. R. Johnston D113, (PDD 49105).
Apothecia developing amongst tomentum of leaf on abaxial surface, found on dead leaves or on necrotic tips of otherwise green leaves. Base of apothecium remains immersed in leaf tissue. Apothecium 0.4-0.6 mm wide, up to 2 mm high, long stipitate, stipe tapering gradually to base, receptacle urceolate, margin collarette-like, extending above level of hymenium. Apothecium yellow-brown to dark-brown, with a few crystals scattered near margin of receptacle. Ectal excipulum up to 80 µm wide at sides of receptacle, extending down stipe, mostly comprising narrow, 1-2 µm diam. hyphae widely spaced in hyaline gel. Innermost layers of wider, 2-4 µm diam. hyphae embedded in pale-brown gel. Medullary excipulum extending down stipe, up to 10 µm wide near top of stipe, comprising thin-walled, cylindric, nongelatinous, yellow-brown, 2-3 µm diam. hyphae with finely roughened walls. Narrow medullary layer extends to margin of receptacle, less than 5 µm wide above hymenium, and here comprising 2-3 rows of yellow-brown, long cylindric cells which have numerous short, 2-4 µm long, divarications. Center of stipe comprises nongelatinous, loose, disorganised, hyaline tissue, similar to that of the subhymenium. Asci 45-56 x 4-5.5 µm, cylindric, wall slightly thickened at rounded apex, apical pore amyloid, 8-spored. Ascospores 6-9 x 2 µm, elliptic to subclavate, tapering slightly toward base, hyaline, 1-septate. Paraphyses 2-2.5 µm diam., cylindric or slightly wider in upper half, extending up to 5 µm beyond asci.
Apothecia 0.4-0.6 x 2 mm, longistipitata. Asci 45-56 x 4-5.5 µm, cylindrici, amyloidei, 8-spori. Ascosporae 6-9 x 2 µm, ellipticae vel subclavatae, 1-septatae.
Etymology. macrostipitatum, refers to long stipe of apothecium.
NOTES. The shape of the receptacle, with its collarette-like margin, is similar to that seen in Crocicreas epitephrum. Crocicreas macrostipitatum differs in having a long stipe, apothecia erumpent from the leaf surface, and 1-septate ascospores.
New Zealand. Wellington: Tararua Ra., vic. Dundas Hut, amongst leaf tomentum of Celmisia spectabilis Hook. f., 11 Feb 1985, P. R. Johnston D100 (PDD 49103).
