AUSTRALIA. TASMANIA: Ex herb. Berkeley (type, K). NEW ZEALAND. WELLINGTON: Tararua Ra., Pukemoremore Summit, on Brachyglottis galopus (Raoul) Nordenstam, 10 Feb 1985, P. R. Johnston D104 (PDD 49099); P. R. Johnston D105 (PDD 49059).
Although not mentioned by Carpenter (1981), C. epitephrum has divaricating cells lining the receptacle above the level of the hymenium. In New Zealand collections, the base of the short stipe of many apothecia is black, with the upper part of the stipe and the receptacle being white and pulverulent. C. epitephrum was previously known only from the leaf tomentum of Bedfordia sp. (Asteraceae) from Australia.
Apothecia developing amongst tomentum of leaf on abaxial surface. Apothecia 0.1-0.3 mm diam., sessile, cup-shaped, receptacle smooth, hyaline to pale-brown, margin of receptacle white. Ectal excipulum up to 40 µm wide at sides of receptacle, comprising hyaline, 2-3 µm diam., long-celled hyphae immersed in hyaline gel. Small crystals scattered along outside of excipulum near upper edge of receptacle. Medullary excipulum about 5 µm wide, of 2-3 layers of hyaline to pale brown, thin-walled, nongelatinous, long-celled hyphae. Asci 55-75 x 7-8.5 µm, cylindric, tapering slightly to rounded apex, wall slightly thickened at apex, apical pore amyloid, 8-spored. Ascospores 16-21 x 2.5-3 µm, apex broadly rounded, tapering markedly to base, hyaline, 1-septate. Paraphyses 1.5-3 µm diam., undifferentiated or slightly swollen at apex, not extending beyond asci.
Apothecia 0.1-0.3 mm diam., sessilia. Asci 55-75 x 7-8.5 µm, cylindrici, amyloidei, 8-spori. Ascosporae 16-21 x 2.5-3 µm, apice rotundatae, base acuminatae, 1-septatae.
New Zealand. Wellington: Tararua Ra., Pukemoremore Summit, on leaf tomentum of Celmisia hierachifolia Hook. f., 10 Feb 1985, P. R. Johnston D1IO (PDD 49098).
ADDITIONAL SPECIMEN EXAMINED. NEW ZEALAND. WELLINGTON: Tararua Ra., stream north of Dundas Hut, on Olearia ilicifolia x lacunosa, 11 Feb 1985, P. R. Johnston D97 (PDD 49107).
Apothecia developing amongst tomentum of leaf on abaxial surface, in small necrotic patches along margins of leaves, erumpent from leaf tissue. Apothecia 0.2-0.4 mm diam., sessile, urceolate, receptacle pale-brown near base, margin white, pulverulent. Ectal excipulum up to 35 µm wide at sides of receptacle, comprising hyaline, cylindric, long-celled, 2-6 µm diam. hyphae widely spaced and embedded in hyaline gel. Crystals scattered along the outside of excipulum. Medullary excipulum extending to margin of receptacle; adjacent to and below the hymenium up to 5 µm wide, comprising 2-3 rows of cylindric, hyaline, thin-walled, nongelatinous, 1.5-2 µm diam. cells; above level of hymenium medullary cells pale-yellow, each cell with several 2-7 µm long divarications. Asci 37-46 x 4-4.5 µm, cylindric, apex rounded, apical pore amyloid, 8-spored. Ascospores 7-9 x 1.5-2 µm, tapering to base, hyaline, nonseptate. Paraphyses 1.5-2 µm diam., tapering to more or less acute apex, extending 5-10 µm beyond asci.
Apothecia 0.2-0.4 mm diam., sessilia, receptaculum pulverulentum. Asci 37-46 x 4-4.5 µm, cylindrici, amyloidei, 8-spori. Ascosporae 7-9 x 1.5-2 µm, aseptatae.

Etymology. ilicifolium, refers to host substrate.

NOTES. Divaricating medullary cells similar to those present in C. ilicifolium are also found in C. macrostipitatum and C. epitephrum.

New Zealand. Wellington: Tararua Ra., stream north of Dundas Hut, amongst leaf tomentum of Olearia ilicifolia Hook. f., 14 Feb 1985, P. R. Johnston D111 (PDD 49101).
OTHER SPECIMENS EXAMINED. NEW ZEALAND. TAUPO: Tongariro Natl. Park, Ketetahi Springs Tr., on Celmisia spectabilis, 21 Mar 1984, P. R. Johnston D123 & E. H. C. McKenzie (PDD 49137). WELLINGTON: Tararua Ra., Pukemoremore Summit, on Celmisia spectabilis, 10 Feb 1985, P.R.Johnston D102, (PDD 49104), vic. Dundas Hut, 14 Feb 1985, P. R. Johnston D113, (PDD 49105).
Apothecia developing amongst tomentum of leaf on abaxial surface, found on dead leaves or on necrotic tips of otherwise green leaves. Base of apothecium remains immersed in leaf tissue. Apothecium 0.4-0.6 mm wide, up to 2 mm high, long stipitate, stipe tapering gradually to base, receptacle urceolate, margin collarette-like, extending above level of hymenium. Apothecium yellow-brown to dark-brown, with a few crystals scattered near margin of receptacle. Ectal excipulum up to 80 µm wide at sides of receptacle, extending down stipe, mostly comprising narrow, 1-2 µm diam. hyphae widely spaced in hyaline gel. Innermost layers of wider, 2-4 µm diam. hyphae embedded in pale-brown gel. Medullary excipulum extending down stipe, up to 10 µm wide near top of stipe, comprising thin-walled, cylindric, nongelatinous, yellow-brown, 2-3 µm diam. hyphae with finely roughened walls. Narrow medullary layer extends to margin of receptacle, less than 5 µm wide above hymenium, and here comprising 2-3 rows of yellow-brown, long cylindric cells which have numerous short, 2-4 µm long, divarications. Center of stipe comprises nongelatinous, loose, disorganised, hyaline tissue, similar to that of the subhymenium. Asci 45-56 x 4-5.5 µm, cylindric, wall slightly thickened at rounded apex, apical pore amyloid, 8-spored. Ascospores 6-9 x 2 µm, elliptic to subclavate, tapering slightly toward base, hyaline, 1-septate. Paraphyses 2-2.5 µm diam., cylindric or slightly wider in upper half, extending up to 5 µm beyond asci.
Apothecia 0.4-0.6 x 2 mm, longistipitata. Asci 45-56 x 4-5.5 µm, cylindrici, amyloidei, 8-spori. Ascosporae 6-9 x 2 µm, ellipticae vel subclavatae, 1-septatae.

Etymology. macrostipitatum, refers to long stipe of apothecium.

NOTES. The shape of the receptacle, with its collarette-like margin, is similar to that seen in Crocicreas epitephrum. Crocicreas macrostipitatum differs in having a long stipe, apothecia erumpent from the leaf surface, and 1-septate ascospores.

New Zealand. Wellington: Tararua Ra., vic. Dundas Hut, amongst leaf tomentum of Celmisia spectabilis Hook. f., 11 Feb 1985, P. R. Johnston D100 (PDD 49103).
