"... some authors have used ... “subfamilies” in recent work, discriminating the taxa with “nodulisporium-like anamorphs” sensu Ju and Rogers (1996) (i.e., the hypoxyloid Xylariaceae) from those with “geniculosporium-like anamorphs” (i.e., Xylaria and allies). These subfamilies have been used in subsequent studies (Daranagama et al. 2014, 2015; Hsieh et al. 2005, 2010; Stadler et al. 2010a, c, 2013;Tangetal.2009). Several polythetic and molecular phylogenetic studies (Daranagama et al. 2015; Maharachchikumbura et al. 2015; Stadler et al. 2010c) have indicated the possible need for the separation of “Hypoxyloideae” and “Xylarioideae” as separate families. However, molecular data are so far only available for a small fraction of the existing species and no reliable data are available for several genera. Therefore, the above classification is widely based on a combination of molecular data and morphological features relating to the type of asexual morph (cf. Stadler et al. 2013)."
