rooting singly in a bank close to Nothofagus solandri stumps, Maitai Valley, 29.4.1956, Stevenson. This appears to be near to, but distinct from, Strobilomyces fusisporus Kawam. described from Japan by Kawamura (1954).

Typus: Stevenson 1060.
Pileus 10-14 cm. diam., light to medium ochraceous brown, darker at centre, covered with fibrillose scales, pellicle peeling; flesh yellow when first cut, then turning brown, flesh of centre of cap and stipe turning bright green and then darkening almost to indigo. Pores 3-9 mm. long X 1-2 mm. wide, dissepiments thin, pore layer separable. Stipe 2.5 X 3 cm., tapered slightly to rooting base to which was attached a mass of white mycelium binding the litter together; more or less distinct ring, brownish in colour and somewhat scaly below the ring, yellowish and striate above. Spores 11 X 3.5m, ochraceous tawny, thickwalled.
under Pseudotsuga menziesii, Ashley Forest
Pileus up to 8 cm. diam., glutinous, bright yellow ochre to dull ochre, flesh creamy yellow, darkening slightly when cut. Pores up to 1 mm. or more in diam. and to 8 mm. long, yellow, slightly or strongly decurrent. Stipe 1-2 X 5-10 cm., yellow to yellow-ochre, conspicuous membranous ring with the stipe usually thickened under the ring, colour darker below the ring except at the base which is often white. Spores 8-10 X 3-4um.
common in plantations of Larix decidua.
This fungus appears to correspond with figs. 10, 12 and 18 of Kallenbach's illustrations (t. 17) of Boletus elegans (flavus). (Typical S.flavidus (Fr.) Singer is a smaller, more tawny fungus of moist Pinus woods in the northern hemisphere)
Pileus 7-10 cm, diam., glutinous at first, ochraceous to light red-brown, drying sub fibrillose, pellicle peeling; flesh white to pale yellow, scarcely turning colour when cut. Pores up to 1 mm. diam., readily separable, yellow at first, darkening to ochre, depressed round stipe or almost sinuately decurrent. Stipe 1.5-2 X 3-8 cm., without a ring, equal or tapering to the base, yellow above, becoming fawn or brown below, finely dotted with darker glandulae, Spores 10 X 3-3.5um, thick-walled.
associated with Pinus at Hanmer, Nelson and elsewhere.
Pileus 10-23 cm, diam., glutinous, dark brown drying lighter brown, pellicle peeling, flesh soft, yellow. Pores 5-10 mm, long X 0.5-1 mm, diam., yellow, becoming olive brown with age, usually adnate, occasionally slightly decurrent. Stipe 1.5-2.5 X 5-8 cm., with a well developed membranous ring, yellow with more or less conspicuous glandulae above, light brown below, Spores 9-10 X 3.5um.
commonly associated throughout the country with Pinus radiata, though more abundant in the South than in the North, its distribution being somewhat complementary to that of Amanita muscaria which is also associated with this tree.
The New Zealand form of this fungus appears to be usually more robust, and with more strongly developed yellow colour than the common European forms as illustrated by Bresadola (1931) and Kallenbach (1940).
Pileus 4-7 cm. slightly glutinous at first, fawn to light brown, smooth; flesh with a strong peppery taste. Pores about 0.5 mm. diam., dull brown to dark red. associated with Pinus in the Kaingaroa Forest.
Pileus 4-9 cm. diam., dry, dark blackish brown, velvety, margin inrolled, flesh white, firm, not changing colour when cut; pellicle of dermatocystidia 30 x 6-8meach containing droplets or granules of pigment, arranged in a loose palisade layer. Pores 0.5-1 mm. diam., tubes 3-6 mm. long, pale pink fawn, tube layer readily separable, depressed round the stipe. Stipe 4-8 X 1.5-3 cm., dark blackish brown, velvety, tapering upwards, white at base, flesh white and firm, surface of stipe without dermatocystidia of cap but with pigment in hyphal ends and some trichocystidia. Spores 10-11 X 3-4um, colourless, thin-walled, print practically colourless with a pink-fawn tinge, no cystidia seen.
