Notes
editorial
Dixon (1926) put Brown's Grimmia oamaruense in synonymy with Grimmia apocarpa Hedw., a homotypic synonym of Schistidium apocarpum (Hedw.) Bruch & Schimp.
It is not clear if Dixon saw a specimen of Grimmia oamaruense in Brown's collection or not. He placed a number of Brown's names in syonymy with Grimmia apocarpa, and stated " of the above reductions I have examined specimens of the larger number, and of the rest the descriptions leave practically no doubt of the identity of the respective plants with one or other of the many forms of G. apocarpa.
Etymology
The epithet oamaruense refers to the type locality (near Weston, close to Oamaru).
