The generic name alludes to a resemblance to the northern hemisphere genus Tetraphis. According to Brotherus & Dixon (in Dixon 1912) the terminal cluster of gemmae of this plant “is enclosed in bracts resembling those of Tetraphis but smaller”.

Etymology
