major
The orthographies major/majus and maior/maius are both acceptable alternatives (with i and j being interchangeable to a large extent in Latin). Whichever letter was used in the basionym protologue should be preserved in all subsequent recombinations and corrections. Major (or maior) is the masculine/feminine form --- majus (or maius) is the neuter form, which must be used in the neuter genus Geniostom. Since Cheeseman published the name as Geniostoma ligustrifolium var. major, the appropriate correction is Geniostoma ligustrifolium var. majus (rather than maius).

editorial
Conn (1980) treated the New Zealand species G. ligustrifolium A.Cunn. and its two named varieties var. crassum Cheeseman and var. majus (var. major of Cheeseman 1906) as part of G. rupestre J.R.Forst et G.Forst. Conn (1980), and Conn (in Connor & Edgar 1987) made combinations for var. crassum and var. ligustrifolium. Conn (1980) did not retain var. majus, preferring to treat this Three Kings endemic as part of var. ligustrifolium (Connor & Edgar 1987). We reject Conn’s treatment and retain the names provided by Cheeseman (1925).
