No living type material could be located for this species to determine its phylogenetic placement in this study. Wang et al. (2015) provided a new combination for Niesslia taiwanensis in Stachybotrys without explanation. Sivanesan & Hsieh (1989) considered the conidiophores formed in culture could represent Monocillium but could not confirm this due to a lack of conidia. Placement of this species in Stachybotrys is doubtful pending further investigation.
