editorial
Online sources cite Acta Phytotax. Geobot. 8: 78 (1939) for the first publication of this combination, but the combination published there is Farfugium tussilagineum var. giganteum (Siebold & Zucc.) Kitam. Furthermore, the same sources cite Acta Phytotax. Geobot. 8: 268 (1939) for the first publication of Farfugium japonicum, and this page is not found online..
editorial
There is possible confusion over the citing of infrageneric taxa in Farfugium with the epithet "giganteum". Both Farfugium giganteum and F. japonicum var. giganteum are recorded for New Zealand in the Subtropcals journal series, both apparently having been sold as Ligularia reniformis (which it is not). However, Farfugium gigantem Damman is now regarded as a heteroypic synonym of synonym of Farfugium japonicum (var. japonicum), whereas Farfugium japonicum var. giganteum (Siebold & Zucc.) Kitam. is an accepted variety of Farfugium japonicum. The image on p. 18 of Subtropicals 5(3) (2006). appears to correspond to this taxon.
