This name appeared as a nom.nud. on p. 49 of Gardeners' Chronicle, ser. 3, 4 (July 14 1888) as Begonia Haageana, n.sp. Later on the page there is a brief description in the text: "a new Brazilian species in the way of B. echinosepala, but much larger. The flowers are produced in lare clusters, each flower measuring about 1 inch in diameter, pale pink in colour." Later, on p. 695 (Dec 15). the name was "corrected" to Begonia scharffi. A figure of B. Scharffii lately appeared (t. 7028) in the Botanical Magazine. Sir Joseph Hooker altered the name from B. Haageana to B. Scharffi at the request of Messrs. Haage & Schmdt who distributed the plant. It seems the same plant was described as Begonia scharffiana by Regel in Gartenflora 37: 127–128. POWO (2/2/2023) accept both B. haageana and B. scharffiana with B. scharffii as a synonym of B. Scharffiana. The name that should be accepted depends on whether or not the very brief descripton in Gardeners' Chronicle ser. 3, 4 : 49 is acceptable and/or on the actual dates of the other publications in 1888.
