Previously identifications of a NZ strawberry pathogen based on the taxonomy current at the time were G. comari. G. comari in this sense was a broadly defined species that included the previously described strawberry pathogen G. fructicola. A recent molecular study (Walker et al. 2010) has shown that G. comari was too broadly defined, and that the strawberry pathogen G. fructicola should again be recognised as a distinct species (Gnomoniopsis fructicola).
