Holotype: N.Z., near Weston, close to Oamaru, in small holes on calcareous rocks, R.Brown, s.n., Nov. 1897. Not seen.
editorial
Dixon (1923, p. 142) placed Brown's Tortula hutchinsonii in synonymy wiht Tortula muralis, even though he found no specimens of T. hutchinsonii in Brown's herbarium, "but I think no one studying the description and figures in the volume cited could avoid the conclusion that it is merely T. muralis.
