taxonomic status
A. braendlii is part of the A. campestris/cupreobrunneus species complex with campestris epitype sequence JQ903618 but cupreobrunneus without an epitype. A. braendlii is the correct name for A. argenteus Peck. The complex also contains A. andrewii, which if considered a synonym of A. braendlei then it would be the correct name. Sequenced New Zealand and Australian collections form a separate clade, with all groups within the complex separated by just 1-5bp ITS differences. If A. andrewii is recognised as a separate species then the Australasian taxon also requires a separate name. Multi-gene and morphological studies are required to resolve the separate taxa at species level within this complex.
