Subshrub to 20 cm high. Leaves often slightly keeled, elliptic or rhomboidal to spathulate, 6.5–11(–13.5) mm long, (2–)3–7.5(–8.5) mm wide; apex obtuse; margins usually red near shoot apex, slightly papillate, or rounded and/or minutely erose, occasionally obscurely toothed. Calyx lobes red at apex, oblong to linear, 4.5–7 mm long.

Etymology
The epithet humilis refers to the low-growing growth form of this variety.
