New Zealand hepaticologists, when discussing New Zealand liverworts for the 2020 Threatened list, decided to accept M.A.M. Renner’s concepts regarding Plagiochila aculeata, P. fasciculata, and P. subfasciculata over those of the treatment by Engel & Merrill in by Engel & Glenny in A Flora of the Liverworts and Hornworts of New Zealand Vol. 3 (2019). Renner's 2018 paper in Telopea lays out in detail the history of the application of the names Plagiochila baileyana and Plagiochila aculeata to specimens of Plagiochila subfasciculata.
