Plagiochila subquadrata Herzog, nom. illeg., was not explicitily included in the synonymy of P. fasciculata by Renner, 2018, whose concepts regarding Plagiochila aculeata, P. fasciculata, and P. subfasciculata were accepted over those in the treatment by Engel & Merrill [in Engel & Glenny, A Flora of the Liverworts and Hornworts of New Zealand Vol. 3 (2019)] by New Zealand hepaticologists when discussing New Zealand liverworts for the 2020 Threat List. Engel & Merrill treated P. subquadrata Herzog as a synonym of P. aculeata.
