"We present molecular data demonstrating that the New Zealand endemic Plagiochila caducifolia represents an isolated population of Plagiochila (sect. Arrectae) spinulosa, a species previously thought confined to the eastern Holarctic but which also occurs in Lesotho, southern Africa." In addition, New Zealand hepaticologists, when discussing New Zealand liverworts for the 2020 Threatened list, decided to accept M.A.M. Renner’s concepts regardong this speices over its treatment in by Engel & Merrill A Flora of the Liverworts and Hornworts of New Zealand Vol. 3 (2019).
