The species epithet is derived from Latin saxum (stone, rock), and means dwelling among rocks.
Holotype: Awatere, Shingly Range, on dry rock at perhaps 4000 feet [1220 m], Cockayne s.n. [annotated ‘Type’ in Petrie’s hand] (lecto: WELT SP002612!*, designated by L. B. Moore in H. H. Allan (ed.), Fl. New Zealand 1: 819 (1961)); Upper Awatere, Shingly Range, Cockayne s.n. (possible isolecto: WELT SP002610!).
