Phytophthora novae-guineae Arentz 2022

Additional isolates examined: 7216 (WPC P1256; ITS GenBank: FJ801721), Fergusson Island (9°32′S, 150°40′ E), isolated from soil and root material collected from an Araucaria cunninghamii - Castanopsis forest, July 1976; 7367 & 7368, soil associated with A. cunninghamii seedlings, Woitape (8°37′S, 147°14′ E); 7396 & 7397, soil associated with Agathis sp. seedlings, Yapsei, Sepik River (4°329′S, 141°06′ E); 7448, soil from mixed lowland rainforest, Kaut (2°46′S, 150°54′E); 7469–71 (3 isolates), soil from Trisyngyne (Nothofagus) pullei forest, Pomio (5°30′S, 151°32′ E); 7571, soil from A. hunsteinii - Castanopsis forest, Garaina (7°53′S, 147°08′E)
Colony with radiate pattern on both V8 agar and potato dextrose agar (PDA) (Figure 3); growth at 25°C 7.7 mm/24 h; no growth at 35°C. Hyphae fairly uniform, 4.5 μm diam. Chlamydospores absent. Sporangiophores 2.5 μm diameter, sympodial branching with nodal swellings. Sporangia (Figure 2) ovoid, mean 48 (range 38–60) × 37 (30–42) μm, length: breadth ratio 1.3, conspicuously papillate, apical thickening 6.5 μm, sometimes with two exit pores. Oospores abundant in single strain culture; oogonia (Figure 1) spherical, 28 μm with tapering base, walls tuberculate when mature although sometimes smooth; antheridia amphigynous, 11 × 9 μm; oospores up to 24 μm diameter. Minimum growth temperature 10°C, maximum 32.5°C, optimum 22.5°C
