The following has not all been confirmed, but is partly interpreted from the papers that have been seen. Malus toringo (Siebold) de Vriese has often been regarded as Malus sieboldii (Regel) Rehder, however, it seems this name, Malus toringo (Siebold) de Vriese, is a legitmate comb. nov. of Siebold's Sorbus toringo (1848). The new combination is given in the list of contents on p. VII, and an illustration is on p. 368. The text in the list of contents states "Malus (Sorbus) Toringo Sieb." It seems that Siebold's own combination in Malus was interpreted as a nom. nud. As the basionym in Sorbus was not given with Siebold's own Malus toringo combination, it was therefore overlooked. Therefore, it appeared to be legitimate to Regel to give a nom. nov. for Malus toringo, his Pyrus sieboldii, but the epithet was actually superfluous, as were latter combinations using this epithet.
