Descriptions
Amanita sp. 2 G.S. Ridl. 1991
This is a unique species amongst the Amanita with its unusual elongated umbo. The volva consisting of rows of large, inflated, cylindrical cells places it in subsection Vittadinae of section and subgenus Lepidella. Unfortunately the lamellae were in poor condition, making it difficult to determine the presence or absence of clamp connections at the base of the basidia. Using both options the most satisfactory stirps appears to be Thiersii (Bas 1969), with its clampless basidia and globose basidiospores. Amanita sp. 2 is very similar to A. thiersii Bas and A. aureoftoccosa Bas, differing principally in its larger basidlospores and unusual pileus. A. thiersii was collected from a lawn in Texas, and A. aureofloccosa from dry forest in the Congo. The present species was found on a lawn under Chamaecyparis, an introduced ornamental tree. Considering its habitat and limited known distribution, it was probably introduced to New Zealand with Chamaecyparis from Europe or North America.
