Leptosphaerulina chartarum was previously recorded in New Zealand on this basis of synonomy with Pithomyces chartarum. However these are now considered to be two different species [BSW, March 2023].

Leptosphaerulina chartarum Cec. Roux 1986

The ex-type culture of Leptosphaerulina chartarum (CBS 329.86 ) was sequenced it clustered within the family Didymellaceae and did not belong in the Pithomyces chartarum clade or was related to any of the Pithomyces lineages. Thus Leptosphaerulina chartarum and Pithomyces chartarum are different species.
