Hymenoscyphus pseudociliatus (W. Phillips) S.E. Carp. 1981

HOLOTYPE OF Helotium pseudociliatum Phillips: AUSTRALASIA. NEW ZEALAND. On rotten wood in forests, [no date], Rev. W. Colenso 380 (K).
I have examined the holotype specimen of Helotium pseudociliatum and find that this species is an Hymenoscypus S. F. Gray. The outer ectal excipulum is composed of a textura prismatica. Dennis (1964) indicated that P. pseudociliatum might be a Cyathicula, but he was not entirely satisfied with that placement. Since no combination in Hymenoscyphus has been made for P. pseudociliatum, it is provided here.

Hymenoscyphus pseudociliatus (W. Phillips) S.E. Carp. 1981

Scattered. Cups 1-2 mm. broad, sessile, or substipitate, concave, reddish flesh colour, margin fringed with hair-like scales; asci cylindrically-clavate, 8-spored. Sporidia oblong-fusiform or clavate, sometimes bent, .02-.025 x .005-.006 mm., paraphyses filiform, slender.
On rotten wood. New Zealand (Colenso, 100, 380).
On rotten wood, Colenso B100; B380.
Apothecia scattered, superficial, disc concave, flesh coloured, 3 mm. wide; receptacle soft, cupshaped, smooth, with a minutely crenate margin, seated on a short stout stalk. Excipulum composed of slender, parallel, compact hyphae, 2 µ wide, with thin, hyaline, nongelatinised walls, lying at a low angle, to the surface. Asci clavate, 145 x 11 µ, 8-spored, pore outlined blue in Melzer's reagent; ascospores biseriate, narrowly elliptical to inequilateral, 18-25 x 4-5 µ, nonseptate; paraphyses cylindrical, obtuse, 1.5 µ thick.
Colenso B380 is labelled 'Margin red and ciliate' but that of the dried material is now perfectly even.
in ligno putri New Zealand (COLENSO).
Sparsa; ascomatibus 1-2 mm. lat., sessilibus v. substipitatis, concavis carneo-rufis, margine squamulis setiformibus fimbriato; ascis cylindraceo-clavatis, octosporis; sporidiis.oblongo-fusoideis v. clavatis, subinde curvulis, 20-25 x 5-6; paraphysibus filiformibus, gracilibus.
