Comment: Robertson (1982) records P. lateralis as a pathogen of kiwifruit. However, HM Dance (pers. comm. to RE Beever, 13 Sept 2005) indicated that GI Robertson imported a culture of P. lateralis that was used at the Mt Albert Research Centre for experiments to determine the susceptibility of kiwifruit to this pathogen; and he believes P. lateralis in NZ is only known from these experiments. GI Robertson’s strain books (stored in herb. PDD) confirm that strain “CMI40503” [= IMI 040503 = CBS 168.42 from Chamaecyparis] was imported c.1970-77. Perusal of Robertson (1982) implies it is present in the field kiwifruit population. However, it was not reported by Stewart & McCarrison (1991) in their study of kiwifruit Phytophthora species. This species is otherwise known from conifers, primarily as a virulent pathogen of Chamaecyparis lawsoniana in Oregon (Erwin & Ribeiro 1996). While this host is common in NZ, this species has not been reported from it (Gadgil 2005). Gadgil (2005) lists this species from Northland and from Auckland. We have been unable to confirm the basis of the Northland listing. We conclude the record is doubtful and the species should be considered as not present in New Zealand for quarantine purposes.
