Periconiella broussonetiae McKenzie 1990

Colonies amphigenous, mainly hypophyllous, occasionally on petioles, effused and often ascending leaf hairs. Mycelium superficial, pale, branched and anastomosing, smooth or verruculose, septate,1.5-2.5 µm thick; hyphae below conidiophores thicker, 2.5-6 µm and brown, often forming dark brown multicellular plates or stromata on the leaf hairs. Conidiophores arising terminally and laterally on the hyphae, macronematous, single, composed of a mononematous stipe and a complex head of branches bearing conidia. Stipes erect, straight or flexuous, smooth or verruculose especially at base, septate, dark brown, paler towards the apex, up to 425 µm long x 8-11 µm thick at base tapering to 5-6 µm thick at the apex. Primary branches sometimes bearing branchlets, brown, flexuous, up to 75 µm long x 3.5-5.5 ,um thick. Conidiogenous cells polyblastic, integrated, terminal becoming intercalary, sympodial, conidial scars prominent, 1-1.75 µm wide. Conidia solitary, acropleurogenous, pale brown, smooth, 3-4 (-6) septate, usually slightly onstricted at septa, straight or slightly curved, obclavate-cylindric, apex rounded, base obconically truncate, (23-) 25-40 (-51) x 4.5-5 (-6.5) µm; hilum 1.5-1.75 µm thick.
On living leaves of Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) Vent.
Coloniae amphigenae, plerumque hypophyllae, raro in petiolis, effusae et saepe pilos folii adscendentes. Mycelium ex hyphis superficialibus, pallidis, ramosis et anastomosantibus, laevibus vel verruculosis, septatis, 1.5-2.5 µm crassis; hyphae sub conidiophoris ad 2.5-6 µm inflatae, brunneae, saepe stroma multicellulare, atro-brunneum, in folii pilis formantes. Conidiophora apicalia et lateralia, macronematosa, mononematosa, solitaria. Stipites erecti, recti vel flexuosi, laeves vel verruculosi, praecipue basi, septati, atro-brunnei, apicem versus pallidiores, usque ad 425 µm longi x 5-11 µm crassi. Rami primarii interdum ramulosi, brunnei, flexuosi, usque ad 75 µm longi x 3.5-5.5 µm crassi. Cellulae conidiogenae polyblasticae, in conidiophoris incorporatae, terminales et intercalares, sympodiales, cicatrices conidiales 1-1.75 µm latae. Conidia solitaria, acropleurogena, pallide brunnea, laevia, 3-4 (-6) septata, constricta vel non constricta, recta vel parum curvata, obclavato-cylindrica, (23-) 25-40 (-51) µm longa x 4.5-5 (-6.5) µm later; cellula apicalis rotundata, cellula basalis obconice truncata; hilo 1.5-1.75 µm lato. In foliis moraceae speciei Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) Vent. Holotypus PDD 50789.
Sporulation may be, but is not necessarily, associated with reddish-brown leaf speckling. The specimen is infected with rust, Cerotelium fici (Cast.) Arthur.
Specimen examined: Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal, Mt Austen, 23.111. 1986, E.H.C. McKenzie (PDD 50789 - holotype).
