ITS sequences from NZ specimens (KZ273438, KX273437) suggest the NZ fungus is a different species to that from S America, based on 97% BLAST match to KY462418 (specimen_voucher="MES-1097"), morphologically typical of Mitrulinia usuhaiae (M. Smith, pers. comm.). [PRJ, July 2019]

Only ITS and LSU sequences availabale; these suggest a phylogentic position near the base of Helotiaceae (sister to 'Hymenoscyphus' metrosideri), but not convincing that is Helotiaceae s.s. [PRJ Mar 2023]
