ITS sequences from NZ specimens in Phragmites (identified as L. controversum), Cortaderia and Gahnia are about 95% match to specimens from Phragmites from Europe (e.g. MZ159424, ex K(M) 170680). Based on PDD 42648, L. controversum ex Phragmites ex Germany (Sydow, Myotheca Germanica No. 1945), the New Zealand fungus has slightly smaller ascospores with a different shape. Phylogenetically the two species are closely related within Lachnum.
