Discosiella novae-zelandiae Nag Raj 1982 [1981]

Foliicolous. Thalli crustose, scattered to gregarious, occasionally aggregated and confluent, circular or oval, margin deeply lobed, grayish green, ash coloured or grayish white, with the conidiomata appearing as minute black specks disposed mostly in radial lines. Conidiomata pycnidioid, scattered to gregarious, subcuticular in origin, orbicular to oval in outline, dimidiate, hemispherical to subglobose in section, unilocular, glabrous, black with grayish brown central area and a punctiform centre, 90-120 µm in diameter, 50-70 µm deep, ostiolate, with a clypeus covering the hymenium; clypeus 15-25 µm thick, leathery, of "textura epidermoidea" of dark brown to black, thick-walled cells; inner wall membranous, gelatinous, easily separable from the clypeus, of "textura angularis" of hyaline, thin-walled cells; ostiole oval to circular, slightly papillate, 10-15 µm in diameter. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells, arising in a dense palisade lining the entire cavity of the conidioma. Conidiogenous cells phialides, subcylindrical to lageniform, hyaline, smooth walled, 7-11 x 2-3.5 [mean = 8.7 x 2.8] µm, invested in mucus, often proliferating percurrently one to four times. Conidia blastic-phialidec, didymosporous, subcylindrical to ellipsoidal with a rounded apex and a narrow, obconic, frequently inequilaterally protuberant base, hyaline, smooth walled, wall slightly constricted at the septum, 11-18 x 3-4 [mean = 14.2 x 3.4] µm, initially enclosed in a closely adpressed mucoid sheath that later extends at each end into an ultimately evanescent, but fan-shaped, mucoid appendage; mean conidium body length: width ratio = 4.1:1.
KNOWN DISTRIBUTION: New Zealand.
HABITAT: On leaves of Belschmiedia taraire.
Foliicola.
