Recorded in error
New Zealand
Political Region
Johnston (1990-2021) mistakenly referred a common Phormium-inhabiting discomycete to this species. Although there is some variation in ascospore shape, this fungus is now accepted as Helotium phormium.

New Zealand
Political Region
NZ material all from Phormium; ITS sequences show close relationship to Helotiaceae sensu Baral (H. fructigenus, H. caudatus, etc.), whereas other Dicephalospora rufocornea material in Genbank (Han et al., JN033401; Zhuang & Liu, DQ986480) is phylogentically distinct.

taxonomic status
Widespread tropical species reportedly on wood and leaves. All NZ collections referred to this species are restricted to Phormium. The biological speciealisation of the NZ collections reflect genetic difference to other putative D. rufocornea specimens; unpublished ITS sequences from NZ show close relationship to Hymenoscyphus sensu stricto (H. fructigenus, H. caudatus, etc.), phylogentically distinct Dicephalospora sensu Han et al. 2014 and Zheng & Zhuan 2019. See also the description under Helotium phormium.
